One in three Indians over 65 falls each year. Falls cause 70% of accidental deaths in seniors. The good news: most falls are preventable with simple exercises and home modifications.
Why Elderly People Fall
- Muscle weakness (especially legs)
- Balance problems
- Vision changes
- Medication side effects (dizziness)
- Wet or slippery floors
- Poor lighting
- Inappropriate footwear
Daily Exercises for Balance and Strength
1. Chair Stands (Builds Leg Strength) - Sit in a sturdy chair - Stand up without using hands - Slowly sit back down - Repeat 10 times, twice daily
2. Heel-to-Toe Walk (Improves Balance) - Walk in a straight line - Place heel directly in front of toes - Take 20 steps forward - Use a wall for support initially
3. Single Leg Stand (Balance Training) - Stand behind a chair, holding the back - Lift one foot off the floor - Hold for 10 seconds - Switch legs - Repeat 5 times each side
4. Wall Push-ups (Upper Body Strength) - Stand arm's length from a wall - Place palms on wall at shoulder height - Bend elbows, lean toward wall - Push back to starting position - Repeat 10 times
5. Ankle Circles (Flexibility) - Sit in a chair - Lift one foot - Rotate ankle 10 times clockwise, 10 counterclockwise - Switch feet
Home Safety Checklist
- Remove all loose rugs and mats
- Install grab bars in bathroom
- Ensure all rooms are well-lit
- Keep floors dry and clean
- Secure all electrical cords
- Use non-slip footwear indoors
- Install night lights in hallways
- Keep frequently used items within reach
After a Fall: What to Do
- Check for injuries before moving
- If in pain, call for help — don't try to get up
- If no injuries, roll to one side and push up slowly
- Report all falls to the doctor (even minor ones)
- Assess what caused the fall to prevent recurrence
Encourage your parents to do these exercises daily. A 15-minute routine can reduce fall risk by 40%. Share this guide with them on WhatsApp.
