Proper nutrition becomes increasingly important after 60. Many elderly Indians suffer from malnutrition — not from lack of food, but from eating the wrong things.

Common Nutritional Deficiencies in Indian Elderly

  • **Vitamin D**: Over 80% of Indians are deficient. Causes bone weakness.
  • **Vitamin B12**: Common in vegetarians. Causes fatigue, memory issues.
  • **Calcium**: Leads to osteoporosis. Women are at higher risk.
  • **Iron**: Causes anemia, weakness, breathlessness.
  • **Protein**: Most elderly Indians eat far less protein than needed.

Daily Nutritional Requirements After 60

  • Protein: 1g per kg of body weight (higher than younger adults)
  • Calcium: 1200mg/day
  • Vitamin D: 800-1000 IU/day
  • Fiber: 25-30g/day
  • Water: 8-10 glasses/day (many elderly under-hydrate)

Indian Foods Rich in Key Nutrients

Protein Sources - Dal and rajma (lentils and kidney beans) - Paneer and curd (cottage cheese and yogurt) - Eggs (if non-vegetarian) - Chicken and fish - Soya chunks - Milk and buttermilk

Calcium Sources - Ragi (finger millet) — highest plant calcium - Sesame seeds (til) - Curd and paneer - Green leafy vegetables (methi, palak) - Almonds

Foods to Limit or Avoid

  • Excess salt (linked to hypertension)
  • Refined sugar (diabetes risk)
  • Deep-fried foods (heart health)
  • Processed and packaged foods
  • White rice in excess (high glycemic index)
  • Tea/coffee with meals (blocks iron absorption)

Meal Planning Tips

  1. Include protein in every meal, not just lunch/dinner
  2. Add a fruit with breakfast (banana, apple, papaya)
  3. Replace white rice with brown rice or roti
  4. Include a glass of milk or curd daily
  5. Soaked almonds and walnuts as evening snack
  6. Light dinner by 7:30 PM

Signs of Poor Nutrition

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Slow wound healing
  • Brittle nails and hair loss
  • Frequent infections
  • Mouth sores

If your parents live alone, they may skip meals or eat poorly. Regular check-ins about what they ate today can reveal a lot about their nutrition.
